Walker-Jones Education Campus located in Washington D.C. received a surprising visit from a former alumnus and her team at Love Conquers All. Executive Director, Lanice Dogan Hanna and her team presented backpacks filled with school supplies that will benefit more than 45 students. She also gave Vice Principal, Theresa Edelen supplies for the teachers to use as needed.
To both their surprise Vice Principal, Theresa Edelen worked at the school and had her 5 children, “The Edelen Boys” attending Walker-Jones during the time Hanna was a student. After looking at some pictures from the past, Hanna remembered her instantly. Love Conquers All helps break the cycle of adversity and provide enough opportunity to change lives and communities. They help individuals, children, families and communities facing great challenges to realize their potential. Walker-Jones Education Campus is a prekindergarten through 8th grade community-based school whose mission is to provide each student a diverse education in a safe, supportive environment that promotes self-discipline, motivation and excellence in learning through the four core principles of Knowledge, Service, Leadership, and Character.
Aligned in their goals Hanna looks forward to working with Walker-Jones on various initiatives. This coming holiday season, Love Conquers All will be participating in a gift giving campaign and at the kick-off of 2019, they will be launching etiquette workshops with the Walker-Jones. Executive Director, Hanna believes that while Washington D.C. has experienced much gentrification enhancements and the new school site along with the surrounding area looks beautiful, these students still are being raised in areas of poverty. She remembers what it was like being a student in D.C. in the 80’s during the war on drugs. Understanding D.C. has become a better place, there is still work left to be done. Love Conquers All goal is to be a proactive force of environmental change.
According to Executive Director, Hanna, “These backpacks and teacher supplies donated to Walker-Jones is just the beginning”. We encourage people to connect to those experiencing homelessness along with those living below poverty levels in the same way we connect with others in our lives: through engaging our interests, passions and talents. Getting involved in this personal way makes room for meaningful relationships, which we believe is the recipe for ending homelessness. The task is not to solve complex social systems or to fix someone’s situation. The task is to begin. To JUST SAY HELLO. To connect with someone through a shared interest. By doing this, the most profound change you will see is in yourself
